A Healthier Community is A Better Community

Quick facts about The State of Health
of the
'Black" "African American " " Pan Afrekan "
Community in US

  • Diabetes is 60% more common in black Americans than in white Americans. Blacks are up to 2.5 times more likely to suffer a limb amputation and up to 5.6 times more likely to suffer kidney disease than other people with diabetes.
  • African-Americans are three times more likely to die of asthma than white Americans.
  • Deaths from lung scarring -- sarcoidosis -- are 16 times more common among blacks than among whites. The disease recently killed former NFL star Reggie White at age 43.
  • Despite lower tobacco exposure, black men are 50% more likely than white men to get lung cancer.
  • Strokes kill 4 times more 35- to 54-year-old black Americans than white Americans. Blacks have nearly twice the first-time stroke risk of whites.
  • Blacks develop high blood pressure earlier in life -- and with much higher blood pressure levels -- than whites. Nearly 42% of black men and more than 45% of black women aged 20 and older have high blood pressure.
  • Cancer treatment is equally successful for all races. Yet black men have a 40% higher cancer death rate than white men. African-American women have a 20% higher cancer death rate than white women.

Why ?

Ok so lets cut to the chase, scientifically we are being told here that genetically we are more susceptible to these chronic diseases  ( interesting I Know) . However our community has the largest uninsured rate than any other community ( excluding illegal immigrants )

So the question I ask is . Are we genetically prone to these diseases ? Are we just providing ourselves with inadequate health care ?

Now of course , I am aware of the rise of insurance prices and yes if it comes down to shelter or medical insurance ; I would be the first to adios the policy .
However I am asking you to think about the small things .
For example could you prevent diabetes without health insurance ?
The answer is YES ;
The solution is Healthier lifestyle choices such as :
  • Diet ( and I do not mean FAD diets , I am speaking about proper Nutrition )
  •  Exercise (cardio and strength training )
  • Proper Medical surveillance such as annual check ups
This is just one example of how chronic diseases can be prevented thru healthy lifestyle choices.
Health Genocide thru obesity, Diabetes, High blood Pressure, High cholesterol , Tobacco induce Cancers and overall population to your body with chemicals and processed foods . Can Stop ! and must be Stopped !

How can you help make the change ?
It is simple start in your own home. Rid your cabinets of Toxins that are masked as Food. Get educated on proper nutrition and start to live a more active life.

I do not believe that genetically we are diseased however I do believe that mentally we are unhealthy and we must treat bodies as the temples that they are.

#ThePoetryMovement - What Inspired This Movement

This idea came to me back on December 6th, 2011. Earlier that day iHad a conversation with two business contacts of mine that live in the city of New Jersey. One guy said to me “"I wouldn't even know that Florida had a poetry scene if it hadn't of been for meeting you. This conversation with Ghandi Gps operator of Ghandi's Poetry Spot is a BIG reason why I introduced this idea.”

The other conversation iWas having which inspired the introduction of this movement was with
EisMe DaHost PatienoMics. We were talking about how it will take for some SERIOUS networking to happen in order for business to run smoothly. He has recently placed his passion into the industry & is looking to make some major moves in the game. This conversation was no doubt a big reason why you will get tired of me saying things about #ThePoetryMovement.

I believe what really just made me say, “Okay, DO IT!”, was a conversation in a group chat where a female had no idea about a poetry event in here area. Thanks to Moses West she will no longer feel as if she's been "Missing out." I couldn’t help, but ask myself...”Would she have to ask such a question if there was a median for everything that is going on with everything poetry?

After spreading the buzz about #ThePoetryMovement, we ended up gaining recognition from My Blogword, a website based in Switzerland (according to the contact section of their website) that featured #ThePoetryMovement blog post on their website. It was because of @NuRa_Sunbeam’s tweet(See above) that we were blessed with such recognition. As the buzz about #ThePoetryMovement grew larger, iEnded up running into another person by the name of Dl Davis who featured #ThePoetryMovement blog post on his website. After already seeing such a buzz about #ThePoetryMovement this website feature was nothing short of a blessing.

It’s a wondeful thing to see so many people willing to stand up & try to make a change in the world. I say it’s about TIME, we as poets, STAND UP & make our mark in the entertainment world. I believe in change...& I think you do too ! #ThePoetryMovement #LetYourPenMove

#ThePoetryMovement

Poetry is NOW & has always been a great way for people to express themselves. But not only does poetry help those who are writing, reading, or reciting it, but it’s powerful energy finds it ways through the ears & into the souls of those who are reading or listening as well. This fact alone makes poetry a POWERFUL part of life as ANYTHING & EVERYTHING is poetry in some way.

For this reason, with poetry having a bigger audience of fans, it will allow all poets/spoken word artist & artist alike to experience the healing of poetry in MORE ways & in MORE places as the scene & market for poetry will be just as strong as poetry’s power is.

Everyone has a story & whether people know it or not, sharing your story or struggle with other people who can understand your words creates a CONNECTION like no other. This connection can cause inspiration, healing, enlightenment, & growth in knowledge along with many other things because it is our MINDS & SOULS that are connected. This will in turn increase the positive energy that is put back into the world.

All writers, wordsmiths, & literary artists alike should all understand how powerful poetry is. NOW, imagine how much MORE powerful poetry would be if it had a bigger audience? We as poets, spoken word artists, authors & writers alike are the only ones who can make such an increase. It is up to US to come together. It is up to US to unite. Many poets are already networking & building together by way of Social Networking. Though Facebook makes it harder to find those who are on the same page as you, Twitter & Google Plus have a way to follow what are called “Hashtags” (ex. #) or “Trends” by searching for them in their database. This would be a GREAT way for artist to come together & see what other artist are doing.

NOW...iUnderstand the difficulty of keeping in touch with & reading the work of other artist along with living your day-to-day lives. But reading other artist’s work is not my focus here. My focus is to introduce to the world a way for us to connect with like minds. Whether it be to read their work, chat with, or network with them in arranging events or starting projects. Not to take away from sitting at home & writing poetry, but my main focus here is the entertainment industry. People often have LONG drawn out discussions about how BAD the entertainment industry is. Well, iTell you what...how about we do something about it? How about we create avenues for REAL role models to hit the TV screen? What puts a hault on this movement is the lack of connection between artist who are seriously looking to network. When you throw in selfish desires...WE’RE SCREWED !

NOW...I’m writing this article to ask that ANY & ALL artist who are willing to, to hashtag #ThePoetryMovement on Twitter & Google Plus. This way it will be easier for artist to connect with like-minds, because the website's search engine can be used to see who is also talking about #ThePoetryMovement. Twitter also allows "Saved Searches" This will also make it easy for artist who are looking for outlooks to connect with other artist’s & venues in the industry. Facebook & Twitter is often used for a bunch of other USELESS or RIDICULOUS things, how about we come together & put some use to the power of social networking? Social networking has done me MUCH justice in advancing my career & iWould LOVE to see others experience the same(if not MORE) progression that iHave. One good way to make this happen is for artist & poetry supporters who are tweeting or posting about an event to use the hashtag #ThePoetryMovement after their post or tweet.(I’m hoping people see how easy this makes it for artists in different areas to connect & network)

You don’t not need to be a poet to support this movement. If you are a lover of poetry/spoken word & it’s strong energy, then MOST DEFINITELY, you are FAMILY too ! This it not MY movement, if you love poetry/spoken word, this is OUR movement. I’m just giving it a name to be recognized by. So PLEASE...spare me the thought of feeling like a “FOLLOWER” & give yourself the thought of being a SUPPORTER. A supporter of WHAT you ask? #ThePoetryMovement

Please support this by making a tweet with "#ThePoetryMovement" included. iWill then retweet it from 4 different twitter accounts along with a follow back. *Please give me time to retweet & follow back.

Am I My Brother's Keeper?

In society today many turn a blind eye to what is occurring all around us.  We don’t feel the need to be associated with the detriment of our youth or the violence on our streets, as long as it does not touch us. If you believe that somehow you will never be affected, you are greatly misled.  It is only a matter of when and how?

For example, the young neighbor kid down the street is being abused.  The neighborhood knows it.  They hear the piercing screams and hard smacks coming out of open windows…frequently.  People can talk about it.  “Did you hear what happened at the Johnson’s house last night?” “Uh huh…girl it was horrible.”  Yet they don’t feel their involvement should go beyond gossip.   It happens too often.  We become gossip hounds and we have hours to talk yet there are few that want to be active in positivity or are mindful of the need for change.  That is until that neighborhood boy stabs their child in the schoolyard one day.

It’s not a big surprise that the learned behavior of violence shifts from internal shame and becomes an outward behavior.  Eventually it gravitates to outside that home but suppose you were, so to speak your “brother’s keeper?”  What if you took those few extra minutes to knock on that door or call the police and get the young boy some help?  It’s sad that more often than not, we will never know the answer because few would even take the time to ask themselves the question.  Well, I took the time to ask my peers and the answers took  a few turns.

One, “What’s The News?”group member, Tianna Kinlaw stated, “I think that the reason why the community is so run down now is…the powers that be make it difficult to do something with yourself but also the fact that there is no support within the community towards each other.”   That makes sense to  me.  So many believe that sooner or later the system will come in and fix the problem.  After all, we have children’s services and foster care.  But is foster care better then a neighbor’s helping hand.  The system supposedly set in place to help us will not set us free.  It will oversee our actions until at some point we forget the control we had and it becomes normal to have that watching eye.  We will no longer feel that need or urgency to guide our community.  Once our energies change focus then time becomes short, patience is short, and community efforts are twisted into lost causes.

The ideal of living good manifests itself into a life of self and self alone.  We don’t need unity.  We have to watch our own backs.  Who has time to think about someone else when we have our own family to think about?  Which leads to another group member’s comment.

Leyena Floetfre Rae says,  “We live in a capitalistic, individualistic oriented society, as are all societies dominated by Anglo Saxons and Caucasians. They are the only culture in the world who doesn’t believe in collectivism and they are the one we have chosen to emulate. We have a lot of tearing down of these beliefs to do before we can think about any kind of unity. The common enemy is not a race but an ideology!”  Is the self-serving way of life that has been drilled into us since we were youths, the problem?  I think it hides somewhere at the source of the problem.  There is no unity if our only goal in life is to advance ourselves.

Let’s get the movement going!  Maybe we do need to tear down, come together and rebuild.  If that’s the way to get back to a community that cares for one another then so be it.  I want to know if we still have a chance to change.  I want to know if we can regain our collective thoughts and bring our people and the communities in which we live, back to good standings.   I, for one am concerned and I will always have a thought in my mind and urgency in my step for my brothers and sisters.  How do you feel?  Are you your brother’s keeper?
